Free, open source, for iPhone

Know where
you stand.

Moderate makes tracking alcohol effortless. Log a drink in one tap, see today and this week against limits you set, and spot patterns over time. Your data stays on your iPhone.

iOS 17 or later · No account · No ads · No tracking

Simple by design

Awareness, not judgment.

Whether you're cutting back, taking a break or just curious, Moderate shows you the numbers plainly and leaves the decisions to you.

One tap to log

Quick Add drinks for beer, wine, a shot, a cocktail and more, or your own, like "Pint of Guinness, 568 mL, 4.2%". Forgot one? Step back to any day and catch up.

Limits you set

Pick a daily and weekly limit and see what's left at a glance. Totals are counted in standard drinks from each drink's volume and ABV, so a strong IPA counts for more.

Patterns over time

A calendar colors every day by how it went, and Insights charts the last 7, 30 or 90 days with your averages, alcohol-free days and days since your last drink.

Calendar

Your month at a glance.

Every day is colored by how it went, and a column at the end of each week shows whether the week stayed within your limit. Tap any day to open it.

  • Alcohol-free days count. Mark a day with No Drinks Today so it isn't mistaken for a day you just didn't log.
  • Honest averages. Days you didn't log are left out, so a gap in tracking never flatters or skews your numbers.
Insights

See the trend, not just the day.

A bar chart of drinks per day over 7, 30 or 90 days, with the numbers that matter most: your average per logged day, alcohol-free days, days over your limit, your heaviest day and days since your last drink.

  • Your definition of a drink. US (14 g), UK unit (8 g), Australia (10 g) or Canada (13.45 g). Change it and your whole history recalculates.
  • mL or fl oz. Weeks that start on Sunday or Monday. Light, dark or system appearance.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What's a standard drink?

A fixed amount of pure alcohol: 14 g in the US, 8 g for a UK unit, 10 g in Australia and 13.45 g in Canada. Moderate works it out from each drink's volume and ABV (volume × ABV × 0.789 g/mL ÷ grams per standard drink), so a 12 oz IPA at 6.5% counts as 1.3 US drinks. Pick your definition in Settings and your history recalculates.

Does Moderate need an account or send my data anywhere?

No. There is no Moderate account or server. Your drinks are stored on your iPhone and, if you're signed in to iCloud, sync through your own private iCloud storage (turn Moderate off in your iCloud settings to keep them on one device). Apple Health receives your drinks only if you turn it on.

What happens if I don't log a day?

It shows as "not logged" with a dashed outline, and it's left out of your averages. Mark a day with No Drinks Today to count it as alcohol-free instead.

Is it on the App Store?

Moderate is installed from source with Xcode, which works with a free Apple ID. With a free account the app needs re-installing every 7 days (your drinks are kept); a paid Apple Developer account extends that to a year and adds TestFlight and iCloud sync.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Control Center and Action button logging need iOS 18.

Is Moderate medical advice?

No. Moderate is a tracking tool. It doesn't diagnose or treat anything. If you're concerned about your drinking, talk to a doctor or a support service near you.
